Duties

Master’s or Law degree graduates hired under the Economist and Policy Analyst stream are enrolled into our EC Development Program and are involved in all aspects of the Department's work. They conduct policy analysis and forecasts, perform research, and provide recommendations on a wide variety of public policy issues. Recruits can choose to specialize in a particular area of the Department of Finance Canada, or can gain experience in a number of different areas.

By providing expert policy analysis and advice to the Minister of Finance and Government of Canada, the Department is at the forefront in supporting the development and implementation of strong and sustainable economic, fiscal, tax, social, security, international and financial sector policies and programs.

Our six policy branches provide unparalleled opportunities for professional development and hands-on experience in shaping public policy in Canada.

Recruits will have unparalleled opportunities to work on challenging issues and influence important public policy decisions, including:

• Economic and fiscal forecasting;
• The federal budget;
• G20, G7 and other international meetings;

Work environment

The Department of Finance Canada is located at 90 Elgin Street, Ottawa, ON. Our hybrid work model is consistent with the Common hybrid work model for the Federal Public Service which requires Departments to establish a minimum attendance requirement of at least 3 days each week onsite. Specific work arrangements should be discussed with the manager at the time of hire.

Intent of the process

Only applicants meeting the essential qualifications will be included in a pool of qualified candidates from which hiring managers from the Department of Finance Canada and other federal government organizations may draw from until December 2025.

As this is a collective staffing process, the qualifications required may differ from one position to another. Our staffing process allows hiring managers to identify their individual needs for the position(s) they are looking to fill, this may include additional qualifications which will be communicated to applicants that are invited to take part in an interview(s). One or more asset qualifications may be used to identify candidates who may be a good fit for a particular position. Other criteria may also be used such as official languages or organizational needs.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

a) EDUCATION:

Candidates must have or be working on a master's degree from a recognized university in one of the following fields:

    • Economics
    • Public policy/administration
    • International relations/studies
    • Business administration in finance

OR

Candidates must have or be working on a program leading to a degree in law (e.g. LL.B., B.C.L. or J.D.) from a recognized university.

 

b) Specialization in economics:

University coursework must include the equivalent of at least three full-year undergraduate or graduate courses in economics (or six half-year courses) by the time of graduation. Candidates who have a concentration in finance at the Master's degree level and three or more half-year post-secondary courses in economics will be considered.

Note: Qualifications a) and b) will be validated. You will be asked to provide copies of your transcripts.

Candidates must be able and willing to successfully complete their studies by December 31, 2025. Candidates hired will participate in the Economic and Social Sciences Services Developmental Program (ECDP).

EDUCATION:

  • Academic scholarships, prizes, or awards.
  • Candidates having obtained high grades in undergraduate and/or graduate courses in the specialization relevant to the position being staffed.
  • Academic excellence: Applicants must have maintained an average of at least 75% or “B” at their last completed degree, either undergraduate or graduate level.

Degree equivalency

PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATION:

  • Working toward or holding a professional accounting designation relevant to the position (e.g., CA CPA, CMA, CFA ).; or
  • Have become, or be eligible to become by December 31, 2025, a member of the Bar of one or more of the provinces or territories of Canada or in the Order of Notaries in the Province of Quebec

EXPERIENCE:


Experience* in one or more of the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Public policy/administration

  • Finance
  • Law


* The experience acquired can be demonstrated through a combination of volunteer work, student employment (e.g. Teacher's Assistant, Research Assistant) and/or work experience.
